Intermittent Fasting Can I Eat Cheese Instead of Bullet-proof Coffee
How To Make Bulletproof Coffee: 16 Amazing Recipes (using keto MCT or Coconut oil)
You're here because you want to try making some bulletproof coffee (aka Keto coffee), right? Well you're in luck, you Biohacker you.
in 2014 after suffering from "I'm tired and grumpy every morning so don't friggen talk to me"- it is, I found this magical drink and my life changed. But I drank it for a few months and got bored (first world problems).
..So bored that I went on an adventure to find every variation of the recipe I could find. And the article you're about to read is the end result. You won't just get the original bulletproof coffee recipe, but a few personal tweaks that I made, and a few extra, secret recipes that you won't find anywhere else. Lets get hacking!
What Is Bulletproof Coffee?
To make things easy – let us give bulletproof coffee a nickname. Let's call it BPC for short.
The original bulletproof coffee recipe consists of black coffee, grass-fed butter, and MCT oil (medium chain triglyceride).
Okay, it's simple but not quite that simple. You need a certain type of butter, and "MCT" might sound like a science project. But we'll clear all of this up in no time.
Its surprisingly creamy and sweet, but if you have a major sweet tooth rest assured that there are a ton of tricks you can use to alter the original recipe to give you a thick, delicious, sweet brew.
Why Is It So Good for You?
Let's break it down by ingredients – coffee, butter and MCT oil.
We'll start with the coffee. The coffee provides the base for your concoction. Coffee does more than give you an energy boost or enhance your cognitive function. It contains a ton of antioxidants which aid in removing toxins from the body that cause illness and aging. It's full of healthy minerals that you may not be getting enough of elsewhere in your diet.
Just take a look at our articles on the health benefits of coffee here – backed by studies of course.
Now consider the butter. And recognize that real, honest butter is really nothing but pure fat.
PURE FAT!!!???
That doesn't sound like a healthy diet until you realize that butter from grass-fed cows contains healthy fatty acids, Omega-3 and Omega-6, such as what you find in fish. These promote brain power (1). Seriously.
A diet of (healthy) fats can increase mental functionality, especially cognitive capabilities. And BPC is FULL of good, healthy fats.
The real kicker is the MCT. MCTs are a particular kind of fat requiring less energy and fewer enzymes to break down for digestion, compared to other fats and sugar.
What this means is that you get the nutrients into your system in far fewer steps than you would from even a piece of toast. MCT oil is also good for your gut (2) , it has anti-microbial properties, and it curbs hunger and cravings.
In fact, in some cases, MCT can assist in mild weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight. Best of all, MCTs convert to energy on a cellular level without having to process through your liver, which keeps your liver healthy and clean!
If none of that convinces you, the way you'll feel in the morning and throughout the day will!
Why Should I Drink Keto Coffee?
If you're still on the fence about BPC, consider the following as a few of the reasons people (like me) live on the shit:
- Brain power – The combination of coffee, MCT oil and butter does something great to your cognitive function. It feels like it kicks your brain into overdrive. I'm not going to dive deep into the science (because its been done here) but it helps you focus. For a looong time.
- Intermittent fasting – if you're into fasting (and the health benefits that come with it), BPC holds your hand while intermittent fasting. Read more about it here.
- It tastes so damn good – Just try a well made BPC, and tell me you don't love the creamy, smooth, coffee infused elixer. Every time a guest visits and I make them one, they convert. BPC heads are taking over the world faster than WIFI.
What You Need For a Standard Bulletproof Coffee Recipe
For a standard bulletproof coffee, you only need three simple ingredients:
- Great coffee
- Grass fed butter
- MCT oil – High in C8's
- A blender of some sort.
Let's look a little closer at each of these.
Coffee Beans
Don't just opt for the cheapest beans you can find. You want quality coffee as the base for any bulletproof coffee recipe for its superior taste and health benefits. The cheaper the bean, the more health risks you can encounter such as mycotoxins (3) (microscopic mold on your coffee beans)
You want a full-bodied coffee with a fresh, rich aroma to the beans to show there are no defects and for that you will need quality beans/brew. The better your beans, the better your BPC. Here's a list of great beans to start with. You don't need to spend so much on Bulletproof upgraded beans (which claim to eliminate mycotoxins AKA mould). Good, organic coffee beans will have the same effect.
Get yourself a coffee maker. It does not matter whether you use espresso or brewed coffee, just choose a machine that brews good coffee. If you need one, start looking through our gear page to find a good one.
You don't need to spend so much on Bulletproof upgraded beans (which claim to eliminate mycotoxins AKA mould). Good, organic coffee beans will have the same effect.
Grass Fed Butter (or ghee)
While you can adjust the coffee quality to your own personal taste, getting the correct butter is essential. Not just any butter will do; only grass-fed cows (4) produce the cream for the butter that works with bulletproof coffee. Other butter does not contain the omega fatty acids that help with brain function and weight loss.
MCT Oil (keto oil or refined coconut oil)
Many people choose to use coconut oil for this part of the equation, but this is not BPC then; its just coconut oil coffee. While it kind of works, the actual MCT (medium-chain triglycerides) content in coconut oil is not a suitable substitute. Go ahead and order a true MCT oil from one of the reputable manufacturers. That way, you can make sure the balance of MCTs in your bulletproof coffee is sufficient.
MCT is medium-chain triglycerides, a type of fatty acid that is easily converted to energy, increasing endurance and enhancing metabolism. It can be broken down into different types and they all have their benefits. C6, C8, and C10 are the most important ones.
- C6 is a caproic acid. It tastes horrible and gives you 'disaster pants' as your stomach just can't handle it. But there's not enough of it in MCT oil to notice, especially if it's been properly distilled.
- C8 is a caprylic acid and is often sold as the popular brand 'Brain Octane'. This is because your body can break it down super fast and use it to fuel your brain power. Brain Octane is a great MCT.
- C10 is a capric acid has a slower rate of absorption in the body than C8 but is more affordable than C6 or C8.
To make things easy: something high in C8's is what you're looking for.
Top Pick
Brain Octane (By Bulletproof)
The most recommended MCT oil is by far Brain Octane by the bulletproof coffee brand.
This is Dave Asprey's brand – and he's spent years perfecting this formula. With 100% C8's – brain octane will leave your mind clear and body feeling good all day long.
Aside from Brain Octane, there are plenty other MCT oil brands out there. Rather than spending hours researching, choose one of these 3:
Need MCT? Here are 3 Great Options (With high % C8's and all on Amazon)
- Brain Octane: The original by Dave Asprey, and still the best – apart from the price! 100% C8's
- Mickey T8 – a little cheaper and a great alternative to Brain Octane. 99% C8's
- KetoMCT – travel friendly small sizes available, 96% C8's
A Blender
You need a blender – the old 'throw it in a mason jar and shake' just won't cut the mustard. You'll be left with a strange tasting, layered drink if you don't blend.
Most blenders will handle this project just fine, but I might recommend a couple that have proven high quality and long lasting.
Any blender will do, but if you will be using it just for BPC, get something small and easy to clean; larger blenders will become hard to clean when they get oily.
Here are the best blenders for bulletproof coffee.
1. The Original Bulletproof Coffee Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup strong, high-quality coffee
- 1–2 tbsp MCT Oil (preferably Brain Octane)
- 1–2 tbsp unsalted, grass-fed butter
When it comes to starting your venture into bulletproof coffee, you should at least try the original recipe once before dressing it up. Just blend the ingredients and enjoy. You'll see an immediate difference in how your thoughts process and your energy throughout the day.
I'll share a couple of tips with you to make your step over the threshold easier. First, when you get the butter, make sure that it's quality, grass-fed butter, but also check that it's unsalted. Tasting salt in your bulletproof coffee won't do anything to improve the flavor; in fact, it's quite the opposite. If you can, use filtered water: filtration removes harsh-tasting chlorine (5) from water, allowing the taste of your coffee to shine through.
You want the coffee as "clean" as possible from the start. And when you put the recipe together, pour it fresh off the boil. Using an Aeropress or Chemex is the best way to achieve this.
Finally, make sure you blend it long enough to get the frothy consistency, much the way you want your latte served at a coffee house.
2. The Original + Great Lakes Collagen
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp unsalted, grass-fed butter
- 2 tbsp MCT or coconut oil
- 1 cup strong coffee
- 1-2 tbsp Great Lakes Gelatin
Adding Collagen, such as great lakes gelatine, has become a staple of my standard bulletproof coffee. It makes it thicker, and it gives me a protein boost. This helps with fighting away hunger if you're drinking BPC as part of your intermittent fasting journey.
What is great lakes gelatine, and why should you add it?
I'm glad you asked. It's a 'Hydrolyzed collagen'. In simple terms, it's a unique combination of amino acids and protein. Adding it to your diet will promote healing and conditioning over other protein, especially for bone and joint health care. Read more about it here (6).
In a nutshell: adding this protein to your bulletproof coffee will improve its consistency and will leave you with a range of health benefits such as increased joint, skin, and muscle strength. Oh, and buy the green version – it's tasteless.
#3 – The Original + Chaga Mushroom Powder
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp unsalted, grass-fed butter
- 2 tbsp MCT or coconut oil
- 1 cup strong coffee
- 1-2 tsp Chaga mushroom powder
If you're a superfood addict like me, you'll want more more MORE goodness out your bulletproof coffee. Can I suggest adding a few teaspoons of Chaga mushroom powder to your brew?
Also known as 'the king of medicinal mushrooms' Chaga packs an impressive punch in battle to be dubbed the ultimate natural superfood. It's an immune-boosting, antioxidant fungus that has a range of health benefits – read more about them here (7).
Throw a teaspoon or two into your mix before blending, and away you go! Your morning coffee just went from being healthy to making you immortal (slight exaggeration).
#4 – Pumpkin Spice Bulletproof
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp unsalted, grass-fed butter
- 2 tbsp MCT or coconut oil
- 1 cup unsweetened coconut milk
- 1 cup strong coffee
- 1/3 cup organic pumpkin puree
- Pinch of salt
- Cinnamon and nutmeg to taste
Just remember to remove the layer of solids from your coconut milk (8) before adding the liquid to the rest of the ingredients in the blender. If you want, these solids can be whipped into a tasty topping, adding a little something extra as much for aesthetics as for taste. You can serve hot or cold, though pouring it over ice and garnishing with a sprinkle of cinnamon (and the whipped coconut cream) is my recommendation!
Every coffee shop in the world now offers their special holiday flavors, and pumpkin spice (9) is a favorite. But this really adds up in terms of calories, and I always felt heavy and tired afterward despite the caffeine.
Instead, now I just adjust my bulletproof coffee recipe so that I can benefit from the sensation of fall in my beverage while still reaping the benefits of a healthier lifestyle. How do you adjust the original recipe to suit your holiday favorite tastes? Add in some unsweetened coconut milk, organic pumpkin puree, cinnamon and nutmeg to taste, and a pinch of salt to make it all settle together in a beautiful way.
#5 – Gingerbread Bulletproof Coffee
Ingredients
- 1 tsp gingerbread spice per 2 tbsp of coffee grounds
- 1 tbsp unsalted, grass-fed butter
- 1 tbsp MCT or coconut oil
All you have to do is sprinkle the cinnamon spice over your coffee grounds before brewing and blending.
A recipe for low carb BPC (9) is fitting, and the formula for the magical drink ensures that you will run all day long, and you'll be daring everyone around you to keep up with your physical and mental speed.
You have options, such as replacing the MCT oil with coconut oil, which will automatically add a little sweetness to the brew. You might want to back off a little on the amount of MCT/coconut oil and butter you use, since it will give the gingerbread a bit of a tang that takes away from the sweet spice.
Another option is to replace coffee with chai tea. While the caffeine content is lower in chai tea, you still get the health benefits of the antioxidants (10) and minerals as well as the softer taste.
I would always recommend using coffee as the base unless the recipe calls for something else at the start. There are too many variables in the taste and consistency between coffee, tea, and other beverages.
#6 – Turbo Bulletproof Coffee Drops
Ingredients
- ½ stick unsalted, grass-fed butter
- 1 cup coconut oil or MCT oil
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp sea salt
Just combine the ingredients, whisk, and freeze in cube trays! After they freeze, you can store them in the fridge. When you're ready, combine a drop with a cup of hot coffee and blend.
Making your bulletproof coffee in the morning is almost as quick as brewing a standard cup of coffee and pouring in your creamer that contains all sorts of unhealthy sugar and saturated fat. But for those who are really on the run and can't seem to get the alarm set early enough to buy those extra couple of minutes, there is an alternative (9).
I started keeping bulletproof coffee drops a few months ago because there are mornings I need to just grab and go, and I can drop one of these into the brew at work, even if the coffee there does leave a little to be desired in the "quality" area.
It still doesn't take a long time to make these, and since you can make them in bulk and store them, it's worth spending a few minutes on Sunday to take care of business and assure you'll have what you need throughout the week.
#7 – Bulletproof Cocoa
Ingredients
- ½ cup filtered water
- ½ cup coconut milk
- 2 tbsp unsalted, grass-fed butter
- 1 tbsp coconut oil or MCT oil
- ¼ tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1–2 tsp erythritol (sugar substitute) (optional)
- Dash of cinnamon
Bring water and coconut oil to boil. Add rest of ingredients and blend. Enjoy!
They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, and while every woman is different, a great place to start if you want to work your way into her heart is with chocolate. So, even in the midst of a bulletproof diet attempt, a craving for chocolate can be curbed with a bulletproof cocoa recipe.
If you're trying to keep calories to a minimum and aren't willing to ditch an extra snack later in the day in exchange for the pleasure of sipping some cocoa, you can cut back or leave out the coconut milk or (if you don't have dairy issues) exchange it for nonfat milk. It'll essentially taste the same, but without coconut milk, it might be a little thinner.
To be honest, I tend to make a double batch on the rare occasion I get the urge because I keep the second half in the fridge to drink like chocolate milk later. It's refreshing and gives me a boost in the middle of the day (11), keeping me going when the droopy eyes set in around three o'clock.
#8 – Bulletproof Green Tea
Ingredients
- 2–3 tea bags organic green tea
- 2 tbsp unsalted, grass-fed butter
- 2 tbsp coconut oil or MCT oil
- 1 tbsp heavy cream
- 3 cups ice
Not into bulletproof coffee? Well lets turn it into a tea! Brew some green tea, but use double the tea bags. Add oil and butter and blend until frothy. Chill for a few hours, then blend the tea mixture with ice cubes, adding cream to reach your desired consistency.
Green tea may or may not be a favorite of the Brits, but they popularized tea drinking in the United States. It's no surprise that there are lots of people here who prefer tea over coffee. In fact, some people have switched to green tea due to its health benefits (12).
For the tea drinkers out there, you can still have a bulletproof diet with green tea. And even coffee enthusiasts can go for a refreshing cold tea brew every now and then just to change it up a bit. You'll want to brew the tea stronger than usual, and that there are some changes you'll want to make to the basic bulletproof coffee recipe.
Because the properties of tea are different and the flavor of the green tea should still shine through, this recipe is created specially to use with high-quality green tea, not another tea variety like oolong (13) or pekoe.
#9 – Bulletproof Gummies
Ingredients
- 1 cup hot coffee (organic)
- 1 tbsp grass-fed, unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp MCT or coconut oil
- 1 tbsp organic vanilla extract
- 5 tbsp grass-fed gelatin
- Sweetener to taste
These are super easy to make and yummy! Just blend everything, then pour into whatever mold you prefer. Pop them in the fridge for a couple of hours and you're good to go!
Bulletproof gummies are a great way to get a boost of energy that will refresh your mental processes and open your eyes.
Better yet, you can drop them in a fresh cup of coffee and enjoy the brew as they melt. Keep in mind that you'll want grass-fed gelatin (14) to get the added benefits of the omega fats, and you should add your favorite sugar substitute to taste. Other than that, you should already have everything you need to make gummies. Keep them on hand in the fridge at work, and keep them stocked at home for those snack-time cravings.
#10 – Bulletproof ICE CREAM
Ingredients
- 4 eggs plus 4 yolks
- 2 tsp pure vanilla
- 10 drops apple cider vinegar or lime juice
- 1 tbsp MCT or coconut oil
- 1 tbsp grass-fed, unsalted butter
- 1 cup brewed organic coffee
- 1 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 packet Stevia or other sugar substitute
- ½ cup water or ice
Cook butter and the oils on low-medium heat. Add coffee. Let stand for 5 minutes. Blend everything but the water or ice, then add water or ice and blend until you get a yogurt-like consistency. Toss the mixture in your ice cream maker! If you don't have an ice cream (15) maker, pour the mixture into a pre-chilled pan and put in in the freezer. After 20 minutes, give it a vigorous stir and put it back in the freezer. Stir every 30 minutes until it reaches a smooth consistency.
When dieting, you can find ways to stick to the rules and create a as luxurious as any sugary concoction. Enter into the miracle of bulletproof ice cream!
With a little of this saved in your freezer for emergencies, you'll be much more likely to get through those weak moments that we all have and stick to the diet that got you on bulletproof coffee in the first place.
It's nice to think that even ice cream can be a source of the right vitamins and minerals (16) to keep your brain functioning at high capacity. If you are a late-night snack eater, you may want to consider using decaf coffee.
#11 – Bulletproof Cocoa Mousse
Ingredients
- 20 small cups (plastic with lids, like travel containers)
- 1 pound grass-fed, unsalted butter
- 20 tbsp coconut oil
- ½–1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, to taste
- Cinnamon (optional)
Mix all ingredients in blender and pour into cups. Keep in fridge.
Maybe the drops don't work for you, and maybe you aren't a gummy sort of person. Well, I have another option for you that allows you to add your bulletproof blend to any coffee, anytime, anywhere. In fact, if you have issues with forcing yourself to make the bulletproof coffee in the morning, this is a simple solution even in your own kitchen.
Bulletproof fat packs are simple to make, and you can literally just let it melt into your coffee. Now, be aware that you'll always enjoy your coffee more if you blend it to a frothy (17) consistency.
The cocoa is optional, but it gives a nice flavor to your coffee that you can add to every other batch if you like to mix it up. Consider that you could accomplish the same sort of blend with gingerbread spice or other spices, so that you have a flavor kicker in your bulletproof coffee that doesn't add a lot of fat, sugar, or calories.
#12 – Bulletproof….Vegan Style
Ingredients
- 1 cup hot coffee (organic)
- 1 tsp–1 tbsp organic raw extra virgin coconut oil
- 1–2 tbsp non-dairy milk
- Ground vanilla (or alcohol free vanilla extract)
- Stevia or equivalent sugar substitute
- 1 tsp –1 tbsp raw cacao (optional)
- Cinnamon (optional)
Just mix all the ingredients and blend.
Yes, there are bulletproof coffee options for everyone, and it doesn't take many changes to stick to your diet even if you're a strict vegan. That's great news, since vegan diets are some of the hardest to attain to, and though vegans are relatively healthy in their lifestyle and eating habits, it can boost energy levels naturally far more than even someone on a regular diet.
Because some of the ingredients can be a little bland, I would recommend using the optional raw cacao and cinnamon to add a bit of sweet and spicy taste to the concoction. I like a little Stevia (18) in mine, as well as almond or cashew milk rather than coconut milk from time to time.
#13 – Bulletproof Chai Latte
Ingredients
- 2 cups hot strong-brewed organic black tea
- 1 tbsp grass-fed, unsalted butter
- 1 tbsp organic coconut oil
- ¼ tsp ground cinnamon (to taste)
- ¼ tsp ground ginger (to taste)
- 1 tsp honey or a few drops of Stevia
Make sure you brew the tea strong, then throw it all in a blender and off you go. Serve hot.
Chai tea is one of the most popular drinks around, and Starbucks has made a name for itself offering all sorts of chai-type drinks. My best friend is hooked, and she started to notice that it wasn't so healthy the way she orders it (double chai latte with heavy cream and whipped cream on top). She started putting on weight, and when she struggled to cut out her daily dose, she maintained that weight.
So, I started doing some digging and found this bulletproof chai recipe (19) for her. She doesn't drink coffee like me, and she was skeptical of my tastes, so I tried it with her the first time. I'm not a tea person, and I thought it was delicious.
Even the healthiest beverage suffers when we make complex orders that add incredible amounts of saturated fat and sugar to the mix. The bulletproof chai option takes care of the tea addiction and not only cuts out all the nasty (20), heavy (21) ingredients that can be harmful but also includes all the same healthy stuff as bulletproof coffee.
#14 – Japanese Bulletproof Matcha Green Tea
Ingredients
- 1 ½ cups hot water (not boiling)
- 1 tsp organic matcha green tea powder (more or less depending on preferred strength)
- 1 tbsp coconut oil or grass-fed, unsalted butter (or half of each)
- Honey, maple syrup, or Stevia to taste
- Sprinkle of cinnamon (optional)
Mix everything in a blender, pour in a mug, decorate with optional cinnamon, and enjoy!
I heard about this recipe in the process of seeking out a way to cater to the needs of tea drinkers while creating a different flavor. I was inundated with information about green tea flavors, but I saw information on matcha more than once. So, I started asking around about bulletproof matcha green tea (22) . Ask, and ye shall receive.
Something I have noticed that is common among bulletproof tea recipes is the way they are altered from the basic bulletproof coffee recipes. For example, as is the case with this particular recipe, I've found that tea often calls for butter OR coconut oil, not both.
There are also more callings for sweetener of some kind, though most of the recommendations involve Stevia or some other non-sugar sweet thing (like honey). I think it's the organic nature of tea that makes people take this route, and when it comes to oil and butter, the thinner beverage might become too oily if using both oil and butter in quantity. Of course, those are just conjectures.
#15 – An Iced Bulletproof Coffee
Ingredients
- 2–3 cups extra-strong morning-brewed coffee
- 2–3 tbsp grass-fed, unsalted butter
- 1–2 tbsp MCT or coconut oil
Make the regular bulletproof coffee, but refrigerate it immediately. Serve on ice.
I've found that on especially hard days or days after I've had a rough night's sleep, I can benefit from a second dose of bulletproof coffee. This is especially true on days when I can't seem to curb my hunger (23) no matter what I have for lunch.
At the same time, a hot coffee in the afternoon can be really difficult because, even with the added benefits of bulletproof coffee, the warmth can make you sleepy. It's hard to make a fresh cup of bulletproof coffee in the office (especially if you've run out of packets, gummies, or drops).
If you know you're out of those, brew an extra couple of cups of coffee in the morning and keep it for later, carrying it to work and sticking it in the refrigerator. When that need for a snack, a pick up, or a mental refresher hits, grab some ice and pour the cold brew over it. The taste holds up great, especially if you make it a little stronger than usual when you brew it.
#16 – Bulletproof Yerbamate
Ingredients
- 2–4 tbsp loose leaf yerba mate
- 2 tbsp grass-fed, unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp coconut oil or MCT oil
- Stevia, cinnamon, ginger, and/or curcuma to taste
Brew the tea, strain out the tea leaves, blend everything, and enjoy!
If you haven't heard about yerba mate yet, you're missing out. I might be a coffee enthusiast, but from time to time, I have to have a cup of this stuff, and it can be made bulletproof, too. Yerba mate is made from the South American rainforest holly tree leaves, which are higher in nourishment and caffeine content than coffee. In fact, yerba mate (24) is touted as being better balanced in energy and nutrition than any other common stimulant, including coffee, tea, kola nut (25), cocoa, and guarana.
What, exactly, is in these magical leaves? Let's tick the naturally occurring goodness off — 24 vitamins and minerals, 15 different amino acids (good for building muscle), and a bounty of antioxidants. If that doesn't make you think "clean and wholesome," I don't know what will! Add to that caffeine and two other stimulants (theophylline and theobromine) and you can imagine the boost you get from the drink. One tip I would give you is to make this with a French press for the easiest way to strain and enjoy.
6 BIG Bulletproof Coffee Mistakes
1 – Not Using Grass-Fed Butter
Using grass-fed butter infuses the coffee with a particular ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acids, which break down in a much healthier way (27) than other fats and oils.
If you opt for butter that is not made from the milk of grass-fed cows, you negate this benefit, as conventionally raised livestock do not provide the necessary balance of Omega acids to the better.
2 – Only Using Butter
MCT oil provides the energy that you're looking for in bulletproof coffee. Without this element, you may get the benefits of Omega oils from the butter, but you will miss out on the most important elements. Butter coffee is great (its a thing), but if you want the benefits, you need to add the oils.
Your body requires fewer steps and less enzymes to process MCT oils than carbohydrates or other fats, and in the process, MCT oils can help with weight loss, as well as give you an energy boost that lasts far longer than the caffeine in your coffee.
3 – Using Bulletproof as a Meal Replacement
While those who already skip breakfast may benefit from bulletproof coffee as a "meal replacement," filling in when no other nutrients are ingested, it should not be used as a replacement for an existing breakfast.
You still need protein, and you need the vitamins that are not available in the bulletproof coffee. This is a supplement, and if you use it as a meal replacement (28), you'll likely be ingesting too much fat (even if it's the good kind).
4 – Adding Sugar
You can sweeten your coffee with Stevia or another sugar substitute. Adding sugar brings the calorie level up and negates the purpose of using MCT rather than carbohydrates to fuel your body.
The process needed to break down sugar is a lot slower than the process we need for MCT oil, and the sugar in your drink will just slow down the whole thing. Keep it healthier, and if you must add a sweet element, use something that doesn't up the calories.
5 – Shaken, Not Stirred (Not Using a Blender)
Remember, oil and water do not blend naturally, so adding butter and oil to your coffee will make it look like an oil liner spilled in the Pacific. The only way to get the elements to blend into your coffee properly is to use a blender. A spoon stir is never going to work.
6 – Using Coconut Oil in Place of MCT Oil
Coconut oil does have MCTs, but very little compared to straight MCT oil (29). Most people believe that lauric acid (C12) is an MCT, and this makes up about 50% of coconut oil. However, this actually acts like an LCT (long chain triglyceride) and not an MCT.
C8 (caprylic acid and the most potent MCT), which is easy for your body to process, is only 6% of the content coconut oil. Therefore, while you might get a little benefit from coconut oil in your bulletproof coffee, for maximum effectiveness, you should use actual MCT oil.
BOTTOM LINE: use an MCT oil high in C8's
Final Thoughts
So, after perusing the list above, what do you think? Do you find it helpful in deciding to take the leap into the bulletproof lifestyle? I can't emphasize enough how basic bulletproof coffee in the beginning and then all of these bulletproof recipes I'm sharing have added value to my life.
I'm happier, healthier, and actually feel smarter every day. If I skip a day (which I haven't in months!) I can feel the difference, and I try to get my hands on some as soon as possible!
